How is artificial grass for dogs different from landscape turf?

Pet turf is built with a flow-through backing, so liquid moves down through the surface rather than sitting on it. The fiber and infill choices are also made for spaces that get used hard in the same few lanes, which is how most dogs use a yard.

How does drainage work on a pet turf yard?

Rain and rinse water pass through perforations in the backing into a compacted stone base underneath, then away from the area. That is why the surface is usable again shortly after rain or after a cleaning, instead of staying soft the way a wet lawn does.

How do you keep a dog area clean?

Solids get picked up the same as on a lawn. Beyond that, rinsing the area down with a hose on a regular schedule is the main job, and it takes a few minutes. Brushing the fibers upright now and then keeps the high-traffic lanes from matting.

Does it still need mowing, watering, or fertilizing?

No. Those three go away. What replaces them is rinsing and occasional brushing, plus topping up infill in the lanes that get the most use.

Will it hold up to more than one dog?

Pet turf is specified for high-traffic use, and multi-dog households are a common application. How a given yard holds up depends on the base work underneath as much as on the turf itself, which is why the grading and compaction take up most of the install.

Artificial Grass for Dogs Installed in Granbury, TX

The Situation

This Granbury backyard needed a better surface for the homeowner’s dogs. The natural grass held water after rain and wore through in the spots the dogs used most, which left muddy patches that came back indoors on paws. The homeowners wanted a clean, usable play area that did not depend on the weather or on constant lawn care.

The Transformation

4M Outdoors installed 300 square feet of artificial grass for dogs across the play area. Pet turf uses a flow-through backing, so rain and rinse water move down through the surface rather than pooling on top of it. The crew graded and compacted the base first, then fit the turf tight to the edges of the space so there were no loose seams for dogs to work at. The yard sits inside the Granbury service area.

The Outcome

The yard is green through the year now, and it drains after rain instead of turning to mud. Routine care is a rinse and an occasional brushing rather than mowing, watering, and fertilizing. The homeowners have a dog area they can use the day after a storm, which is what they were after.
